Strangerville Things: Part Two

The next morning, Freddy decided to get a job. He found a job as a Lab Technician in the Scientist Career track.

Freddy spent the morning at the library, repairing the toilet and practicing chess. He knew improving his logic and handiness skills was important, and who knew what skills he would need to figure out what was happening in Strangerville.

He found the Curio Shop and spoke to the manager. “Hello there! I’m Irwin!” he said.

“Do you know anything about what’s going on here?” Freddy asked.

“In Strangerville? Of course! I can’t talk about it though…” He looked around as if to make sure no one else was within earshot. “They’re listening…” he whispered.

“Someone told me to ask about your secret inventory,” Freddy said. “I don’t suppose you have any keycards, do you?”

"There are ways to get a Keycard to the basement of the Secret Lab if you get enough Evidence of strange stuff going on in town!"

"Ok...Thanks," Freddy replied.

“Want to buy a colander?” Irwin asked. “It’s the only guaranteed way to protect yourself!”

“Thank you, but I’ll pass,” Freddy said. “Do you have any books on Strangerville?” he asked.

“I’ll give you Untold Mysteries of Strangerville for $20,” Irwin offered.

“Sold,” Freddy agreed.

“Come see me again if you need anything else to aid in your investigation,” Irwin said. “But be careful…They’re watching!”

“Right…Ummm…Thank you,” he said.

Freddy was so excited to read the book that he stood there reading until the sun started to set.

Unfortunately, the book didn’t have any information on current events; it only explained mysteries that happened in Strangerville many years ago.

When he got home, he saw another one of the strange plants, but he could swear it hadn’t been there the day before…

Freddy slept for a while but woke up during the early hours of the morning. He couldn’t get back to sleep, so he decided to go back to the library. He couldn't shake the feeling that he had missed something there.

He looked through the books again and found some strange blueprints. He tried to study them but he was a bit distracted by the couple who were making out right next to him. Who in their right mind came to the library at 5 AM to make out? he wondered.

Then again, he was beginning to suspect that he wasn't in his right mind either...

Freddy went to his first day of work as a scientist.

He really liked his new job. He chatted with the Invention Constructor, tested a metal, harvested some plants, and synthesized a food serum. He tested the food serum on himself but it only made him hungrier!

His failed serum didn’t seem to matter, though. He had done such a good job on his first day that he was promoted to Apprentice Inventor.

The next day, he invented the Momentum Conserver and a SimRay, and he was pretty darn proud of himself.

When he went to take a break in the staff room, he met Zoe. He thought she was very pretty but he didn’t usually have much luck with women, plus he was at work, so flirting would have been inappropriate.

The two made pleasant conversation and Freddy somehow managed not to embarrass himself!

Zoe seemed way out of his league, and there was another woman on his mind...

Freddy finally had enough money to build a house. It wasn’t much, but it was better than living out of a tent!

Leslie, one of the women he met on his first day in Strangerville came by and didn't seem to remember anything strange.

“So, are you uh…feeling better?” he asked.

“What?” Leslie asked.

“You don’t remember?” he asked.

“Remember what?” she asked.

“Never mind…”

He and Leslie talked and really seemed to hit it off. He found out that she shared two of his traits: Geek and Goofball. He was falling for her fast, but he didn’t want to ruin things, so he tried to play it cool.

Everything was great until she suddenly returned to the trance she had been in a few days ago. She left without saying goodbye, but Freddy found himself relieved. Maybe he had dodged a bullet!

“Maybe some other time!” he called after her.

The next day Freddy got a promotion to Junior Tinkerer.

Freddy was tired when he got home from work that day but he was becoming impatient; His work was taking up any time he would have otherwise devoted to his investigation. So, he took a power nap and went to the local bar. As luck would have it, someone from the military was there. He asked about the military base, but she refused to share any information.

"We are instructed to keep quiet about all information regarding the Secret Lab. I can't share that information with just anyone," she said.

But they chatted and became friendly enough that she agreed to give Freddy a report. A lot of it was crossed out and illegible, but he kept seeing the words “secret,” “mother,” and “plants.”

He noticed a man who looked like he had a higher military rank than the woman he spoke to before, so he started a conversation.

"If someone got enough Evidence, they might be able to use it to get a Keycard to the lower floors of the lab. Let's all hope that doesn't happen," he said.

It almost seemed as though people were dropping hints on purpose, the way they kept mentioning the Secret Lab...

“How many pieces of evidence would that be?” Freddy asked. “I mean, hypothetically.”

“Probably 15 or so…Hypothetically.”

Freddy only had four pieces of evidence, not even a third of the number of pieces he would need…but at least it was something...
